If you’re looking for a nearby destination that’s fun, refreshing, and full of family-friendly activities, San Jerónimo, Antioquia is the answer. Known as the town of swimming pools, it’s just 40 minutes from Medellín—perfect for a weekend getaway or a vacation without long flights or endless drives.
From Hostería Guaracú, our countryside hotel in San Jerónimo, we’ve put together a complete guide with the best activities and tourist attractions to enjoy with friends, family, or kids.

1. Start Your Day with Breakfast at Hostería Guaracú
There’s no better way to begin your trip than with a full Colombian breakfast. At Hostería Guaracú we serve a buffet with eggs made to order, fresh bread, arepas, seasonal fruit, consommé, coffee, hot chocolate, and natural juices.
Prefer something else? We also offer à la carte options. And if you’re visiting just for the day, our Day Pass (Día de Sol) includes breakfast, lunch, and access to all our pools and leisure areas.

2. Visit the Main Square and the Famous “I ❤️ San Jerónimo” Sign
Every trip starts in the town’s main square. San Jerónimo’s central park is perfect for strolling, sitting by the fountain, stepping inside its 250-year-old church, and taking the must-have photo at the “I love San Jerónimo” sign.
Don’t leave without checking out the local artisans and sweet shops near the church and around the coliseum. You’ll find souvenirs worth taking home.

3. Hike to the Gruta de San Jerónimo
The Gruta de San Jerónimo is the town’s most important cultural and religious attraction. This open-air stone chapel, surrounded by nature, can be reached through hiking trails of 35 to 45 minutes.
👉 Tip: Go on a Sunday morning and join the outdoor mass. The entire plan takes about two hours—just enough time before returning to relax at the hotel pool.
👉 Tip #2: If you’d like to combine hiking with the Gruta experience, take the longer route from the Leticia area. The trail passes through the Gruta and finishes at our Hostería Guaracú. It takes up to 3.5 hours.

4. Explore Angosturas: Waterfalls and Natural Slides
For nature and hiking lovers, the Angosturas trail is a must. This eco-adventure includes waterfalls and natural rock slides. The hike lasts 2.5 to 3.5 hours, so it’s best to start early (before 7:30 a.m.) and bring plenty of water and snacks.
👉 Tip: Go with a guide or someone who knows the trail, since the area is still quite remote.
5. Go Cycling on Scenic Routes
San Jerónimo is a paradise for cyclists, both road and mountain. Some of the most popular routes include:
Old Road to Medellín: Climb up to Alto de Boquerón and then enjoy the effortless downhill. You can branch off through Puerto Nuevo to reach the Túnel de Occidente or return on the new highway. For thrill-seekers, take the El Tigre trail straight to San Jerónimo’s main square.
Western Triangle: San Jerónimo – Sopetrán – Santa Fe de Antioquia (3–5 hours). A highlight: riding across the iconic Puente de Occidente.
Downhill at El Tigre for the adventurous.
Route to Anzá or Andes: A long-distance favorite with challenging climbs on the way back.
And if you pass through Santa Fe de Antioquia, stop by our Casa Hotel Guaracú, just half a block from the main square, to recharge.
Other routes: Margarita del 8, Los Rieles, Sopetrán Circle.

6. Take a Short Trip to Sopetrán
Just 35 minutes away, Sopetrán is famous for its annual Fruit Festival. Walk around the central square, grab a pastry at the local bakery, and enjoy an authentic small-town vibe.
7. Discover the Magic of Santa Fe de Antioquia
Known as the “Mother City” of Antioquia, Santa Fe de Antioquia is a Colombian heritage town and an open-air museum. Its colonial streets, churches, and the historic Puente de Occidente make it a must-see.
When you visit, stop by our Casa Hotel Guaracú for a refreshing drink or try our Guaracú Platter or Traditional Antioquian Dish. It’s the perfect break in the heart of town.
Only 35 minutes from Hostería Guaracú by car, or you can take public transportation.
👉 Tip: Visit in the late afternoon and stay through the evening to truly enjoy its magical atmosphere.

8. Buy Fresh Fruit at Leticia Before Heading Back
On your way out, just 1.3 km from Hostería Guaracú, you’ll find the famous Leticia fruit market. Stock up on tamarind, carob, mango, and other local produce while supporting small farmers.
